Your chance to win the European Space for Sustainability Award 2026

The European Space Policy Institute (ESPI) is pleased to announce that applications are now open for the 2026 edition of the European Space for Sustainability Award. For the first time, ESPI will be represented by the Centre for Sustainability and Resilience, joining the European Space Agency (ESA) and the European Interparliamentary Space Conference (EISC) as one of the three official partners of the award.

The competition invites young innovators to bring forward new ideas on how space can contribute to a more sustainable future for Europe and the world. If you are passionate about sustainability and eager to shape the future of the space sector, this is your opportunity to take part.

About the Award

Founded in 2012, the Space for Sustainability Award recognises the most original and forward-thinking project ideas that link space and sustainability. Over the past 12 years, ESA, EISC and ESPI have supported this initiative to highlight how space-based solutions and responsible space activities can drive sustainable development.

The competition is open to individuals or small teams from across Europe who wish to explore new approaches to technology, research, entrepreneurship or policy that can support a more sustainable space ecosystem.

Who can participate?

Participants must:

  • Be aged between 18 and 30.
  • Reside, study or work in an EU or ESA Member State (including Switzerland, Norway and the United Kingdom).
  • Apply either individually or in teams of up to four people.

Two tracks, one winner

Candidates may submit their ideas in one of the following tracks:

  1. Research and development: Scientific research, technical innovation or methodologies that support sustainable solutions for or by space.
  2. Business development: Entrepreneurial concepts, business models or product ideas with scalable and feasible approaches to sustainability.

Both tracks will be evaluated together. Only one winner and one Special Mention of the Jury will be selected. Shortlisted candidates will first submit a poster and then, if selected, a detailed paper for evaluation by the high-level jury.
